  • Using correct notation when identifying parameters and statistics.
  • Using a sampling distribution to make decisions about claims.

Remedies…

  • Sometimes, students just have to get something wrong to learn. We told students before the quiz that they should study the notation, but many students still used p when they should have used μ. And that’s ok, they will probably remember this for longer now.
  • Using a dotplot to make a decision about a claim is a precursor to significance tests. Often an assumption is made and a simulation is conducted. It’s very important that students understand what the simulation is modeling in order to interpret their result properly.
